Booming European patent business

11 February 2013

For the third year in a row, the European Patent Office (EPO) has known a new peak in European patent filings. In 2012, the EPO received 258.000 new patent applications. This represents an increase of 5.7% over the year 2011, setting a new record.

Also the number of 65.700 published granted European patents in 2012 led to an increase with more than 5.8% over 2011. As adequately remarked by the President of the EPO, these figures clearly indicate that: "Companies from Europe and around the world are continuing to seek protection for their invention and that Europe remains an attractive market for new technologies. This growth is part of a consistent, long-term trend, and is clear evidence of the confidence of industry in the value of European patents”.
